Research at N.M.S.S. Vellaichamy Nadar College

Introduction

     Education and progression of human knowledge involves experimentation and research would become stagnant. N.M.S.S. Vellaichamy Nadar College has been academically progressing since its inception. The faculty, research scholars and the students of NMSSVN are keen and busy in developing, exploring and expanding their academic pursuit through research projects and research ideas.

Objectives

    To promote, initiate and conduct research activities and research culture among the faculty, research scholars and students of N.M.S.S.V.N. College with the following agenda

  • Constituting a Research Committee
  • Providing funds
  • Necessary amenities and facilities
  • Affiliations
  • Other forms of support

Purpose

     The purpose of Research Committee is to ensure and assure that all policies and procedures of N.M.S.S.V.N. Research Cell are developed and implemented in the right way and to the fullest.

Composition

    The research Committee shall be composed of the following members:

  • Research Department Representatives (One faculty from every research department of the college)

Functions and Responsibilities

       The N.M.S.S.V.N. Research Committee will initiate, encourage and conduct research projects not only within the college premises and conditions, but also from other national and international level resources

Research Support

Faculty & Research Scholars

      The N.M.S.S.V.N. Research Committee will

  • Identify avenues for teachers to take need-based projects and research within our college.
  • Recommend new researches, as proposed by the faculty, with the college management and provide fund and other necessary support (lab, space, books, library usage, travel, etc.) which must be convincing, justified, and within the limits of the project proposed.
  • Provide monetary benefits (in phases) to the Principal Investigator for the successful completion of the project. Audited statements of the expenses must be submitted to the college during the completion of the project. (Conditions in Annexure)
  • Provide seed money, which should be reimbursed if necessary. (Conditions in Annexure)
  • Meet out the expenses of registration fees or travel grants for teachers who attend Faculty Development Program, Present Papers in Conferences and seminars. (Conditions in Annexure)
  • Provide paper publication charges. (Conditions in Annexure)

PG & UG Students

      The N.M.S.S.V.N. Research Committee will

  • Identify avenues for students to take need-based projects and research within our college.
  • Provide guidance from their department teacher, who could act as their research guide.
  • Provide monetary benefit through the guide, depending upon the worth, creativity, and reach of the project.
  • Provide incubation facility and promote students' projects through entrepreneurship.
  • Help connect industry with the department, if necessary, through MOUs and internships.

Role of College’s Finance Committee

      N.M.S.S. Vellaichamy Nadar College’s finance committee is requested to allocate fund towards the development of research culture and research oriented activities at the beginning of every academic year. A year planner and review of the expenses and the research activities will be discussed in the consequent Governing Body and in the Finance Committee meetings

Research Proposals

      This section is an explanation for clause 3.4. This section would gives rules and regulations for project proposals, eligibility and limitations.

      The Faculty, who is willing to execute a project, should give a proposal in the following format. Research scholars are also expected to propose research projects by using the following format provided the proposal should be forwarded with a personal note by the guide and acknowledged by the Head of the concerned Department. UG & PG Students are expected to follow the procedure as maintained by the research scholars.

Seed Money

       Seed Money is to be used to initiate/continue the research work of the faculty or the research scholars or the students. The objective of the seed money is to boost the possibility to receive the financial support from external agencies in future. The applicant must clearly and convincingly demonstrate that the proposed project represents a new research direction in an area likely to generate external funding.

Eligibility for Paper Presentations, Publications, Faculty Development Programs

       Every SF department will be allotted a fund of Rs. 10,000/- at the beginning of every academic year to promote research culture among the faculty. Faculty members can discuss among themselves in utilizing this fund to show their active participation in research oriented activities like:

       Paper presentation (Only in International seminar or conference) – a part of the allotted fund could be used either as a full payment or part payment of registration fee for one or two faculty of a department

      Paper Publication (Only in Scopus or Web of Science or Springer Journals, which are of international value and with high bibliometric index) – a part of the allotted fund could be used either as a full payment or part payment of paper publication charges fee for one or two faculty of a department.

      Faculty Development Program (FDPs) - a part of the allotted fund could be used either as a full payment or part payment of registration fee for one or two faculty of a department. In case the faculty is attending FDPs offered at free of cost by sponsoring agencies like ICT Academy, the allotted fund could be used for travel allowance.

Rules and clarifications

  • A faculty of a department should utilize the allotted fund only once and under only one category.
  • Equal chance must be given to multiple faculties.
  • If problem arise, Principal of the college will be the authority to nominate a faculty to utilise the fund.
  • The HODs and the faculty should get prior information from the Director SF and Principal before claiming the fund
  • Fund utilization should be submitted and approved by the Research Committee members for every utility as soon as it is claimed.

Grants Administration

      The Research Committee and the Dean should consolidate, audit and submit the final report of fund utilization and projects and their results by the end of every academic year to the Governing Body and to the college management.

Research Misconduct

      Misuse of research schemes and funds by any means of fraudulence will be seriously dealt with by the research committee and the college management.

      Should we prepare an undertaking? – A kind of promissory note from the faculty and other who take a project and use the grants?
